In western Japnan, typhoon Talas struck, creating much destruction. Telephone lines were down, cars piled on top of each other, and people gone missing all because of the flash flooding from Talas. Members of Japan's Self-Defense program was kept busy, down some streets they would have to travel in a boat becasue the water was so high. I think it's sad whenever these things happen, because lives are lost, homes and meaningful objects are damaged or gone. Many people's lives will change due to this typhoon and it will take a long time to get things back to the way they were.

Opening Activity

I read the article about Iran releasing the two jailed American men. I think that it is ridiculous that the two men were kept in the Tehran prison for two years on accounts of spying charges. Their bails are $500,000 each and will be released back to America once the bails are accounted for. I think that is a ridiculous amount of money that they need to pay for something that they didn't do. Yes, it was stupid to hike on the Iran-Iraq border, however if they were spies they would have had better equipment. But overall im glad the two men finally get to return home. This story has significance, timeliness, and human interest.

Ruby Bridges was the first black student in the formerly all-white elementary school in New Orleans. She was born in 1945, around the time period when racism was at its peak. Her and her mother had to be lead into the school each and every day by the federal marshals. Ruby was taught by a nice white teacher (Mrs. Henry) in a classroom all by themselves.

In Greenfield, Iowa a couple found a pumpkin growing in their pear tree. I think this is very strange and the vine from the nearby garden grew up the tree and sprouted a pumpkin from the vine. This story is unusualness and timeliness.

Opening Activity

In the Jonesboro shooting, four students and one teacher were killed along with ten other students injured by two teenage boys, Mitchell Johnson(13) and Andew Golden(11) who also attended the middle school. My assumtion about why the two students commited the massacre is that they were troubled students with troubled home lives. They had been around guns so often and had easy access to them that this idea of theirs was so easy to commit. The angle I would go at for this story would be talking to the boys and getting their reasons for why they did what they did. I would also ask the two boys' parents if they saw any red flags in their sons behavior and if they had caught the signs, then I would ask if they thought the trajegdy could have been prevented.

Opening Activity

The U.S postal service may slow even more, as 3,700 postal service locations are possible for close. The first class mail will now reach people within 2-3 days, instead of 1-3 days, so people will no longer be able to get their mail the day after it was sent.
My opinion about this is that it's not that big of a deal because people can wait an extra day to get their mail. However, if the 3,700 postal service locations do shut down thousands of people will loose their jobs, and that would cause a serious problem.
The criteria it meets is significance&prominence.

Opening Activity

The BCA wildfire that has spread 100,000 acres finally slowed down due to weather, such as cooler temperatures and lighter wind. However the number of firefighters has grown from 200-500, and they are using bulldozers and hand tools to clear brush and dig ditches to try to prevent the fire from spreading to more forest and to properites. The town of Isabella is only a few miles away from the fire, so the firefighters  are trying even harder to keep the fire away from the town, which is in danger of being engulfed by the massive flames. My opinion is that the fire will be stopped before it actually does spread to Isabella, because there are many firefighters who will protect the town and keep the peoples homes and lives safe. It is suprising that this is one of the largest forest fires Minnesota has ever had.

Google+

I think that google+ won't work as well as Facebook. I think this because so many people already have a Facebook and will stay loyal to their socal network. Although google+ has a better gaming system, everybody already has a Facebook and I highly doubt the majority of people will switch over. Like with Twitter, alot of people have one, however more people have Facebooks.

In New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, thousands of people gathered in small streets, statehouse steps, and other places to unveil monuments and pledge allegiance. Many people on the facebook world changed their profile pictures yesterday to American flags. There were also online tributes, large and small public gatherings and nation wide memorials. At one of theses gatherings, a man brought in a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, when the people there saw this it brought despair upon those who were in the attack or those that lost someone that perished during the attack.
